Lloyd’s Register-Fairplay (LR-F) has adopted a Style Guide for recording company
names. This has been adopted to ensure consistency in searching the database
and in viewing the results, and to ensure that the characters used in names are
compatible with software programs. The main rules that have been adopted in
recording company names are as follows:
-
Character Set – only English characters are utilised
-
Punctuation – no punctuation marks are utilised with the exception of:
apostrophe, ampersand (&) to replace the word “and”, hyphen, single speech
marks.
-
Abbreviations – are standardised
-
Acronyms – are after the company name
-
Initials – before company names are without spaces (AB Shipping); if it is the
name of an individual there is a space between initials (A N Another).
Company Name Search Guide
As the company name-style recorded by LR-F may not be the exact name-style
recorded on the company registration documents, users are advised to search for
companies using the “contains” option and key words or acronym from the name.
